Canopy of Color is a tree that always blooms. Inspired by Charleston’s beloved dogwoods and azaleas, this kinetic sculpture transforms the fleeting beauty of spring into a year-round celebration. Nine five-lobed azalea blooms and eight four-lobed dogwood blooms are carefully balanced and mounted on precision bearings, allowing them to rotate gently in the wind. The result is a living canopy that moves with the air, creating a dynamic focal point visible from a distance and unforgettable up close.
The blooms are fabricated from PVD-coated marine-grade stainless steel polished to a mirror finish. Their luminous surfaces reflect sky, trees, architecture, and the people gathered below, weaving the community itself into the artwork. Looking upward at the shifting reflections becomes a shared experience – one that invites photographs, conversation, and return visits. In winter months, when natural blooms recede, Canopy of Color will continue to radiate brilliance, enlivening the landscape with vibrant color and motion.
The surrounding landscape is designed as an extension of the artwork. Gently sculpted berms invite adults to recline and look skyward while children move freely through the space. Accessible paths and seating ensure that everyone can gather beneath the canopy and experience it from multiple perspectives. Durability and longevity are central to our approach. Built from weather-resistant materials and engineered for structural integrity in high winds and heat, the sculpture balances innovation with resilience. Low-maintenance finishes and thoughtful construction ensure it will remain safe, sustainable, and visually striking for decades.

Canopy of Color celebrates Charleston’s spirit – its warmth, creativity, and welcoming energy. More than a sculpture, it will become a landmark: a radiant gathering place that honors the city’s heritage while boldly blooming into its future.
